Blog Promotion Tip – Using Links

Posted by beccablogger on February 9, 2009

Links are an important part of SEO and as such, they are very important to getting your blog out there on the web to be searched for by other people looking for your content.   Not only do links help you with your SEO, they are a good networking tool between yourself and other bloggers.   That is why, there are two very important things to remember when creating and maintaining your blog:

Your Blogroll:  Your blogroll links your viewers to your favorite blogs.  Often if you add a blog to a blogroll, the blogger will investigate and, if they like your blog they will add you to their blogrol.  This is a good and common way to get your blog infront of other blog readers.

Links and Trackbacks: To re-itterate, links are very useful for your SEO.  So, if you are posting about this cool article you read, link to the article directly.  If that article happens to be in someone elses blog, the blogger will be sure to notice it and appreciate your post that linked to them.  They may even offer you a link in return, but either way, this is a good tap on the shoulder for other bloggers out there.

To explain the importance of linking further, I would like to quote a google explanation of how this works:

The best way to ensure Google finds your site, is for your pages to be linked from lots of pages on other sites. Google’s robots jump from page to page on the Web via hyperlinks, so the more sites that link to you, the more likely it is that we’ll find you quickly.

Another good way to get incoming links to your site is to research.  Find blogs or websites with content relevant to yours.  Most site and blog owners have a section allowing you to contact them.  Send these site owners a personal email requesting a link.  Do not use a generic letter written to all sites that you find.  These will be noticed right away and quickly discarded.  Find ways to personalize it and explain why you feel it would benefit their site as well as your own.

Directories are also a good source of incoming links.  Social bookmarking sites such as technorati, del.lic.ous and others all offer catagorized directories.  Visit these sites to discover what you need to do to get your site listed.  It is a lot of work, but it will be worth it.

Another way to add links: Lists.  Lists of your top <insertwhateverhere> are great ways to  promote your blog and create links.  People love these lists, and they get dugg all the time.

In SEO remember that both outbound and inbound links are considered when indexing your site.  Use both wisely, and if possible incorporate them into eachother to make an interesting cohesive site, that crawlers will work well with.
